Chapel Hill Mandolin Lessons Private Lessons from a Professional

The Scoop

  • I offer lessons on Mondays and Tuesdays in my teaching studio here at our home @ 318 Burris Place, Chapel Hill, NC – about one mile from downtown Chapel Hill.
  • We usually start off with one 30 minute lesson, (at a mutually agreed upon time), after which we will make a plan for future lessons.
  •  Subsequent lessons may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length, and may be weekly, bi-weekly, or on demand, whatever is best for the student, according to availability.
  • Payment is generally made per lesson, though some elect to pay ahead for 3-4 lessons.
  • I do accept cancellations, if given to me at least 48 hours in advance. (Advance notice gives me a chance to offer the time to someone else on the waiting list, as a “one-off”, and allows us all to have the flexibility we need in these busy times). However, if I am not informed 48 hours ahead, and the student decides not to come to their scheduled lesson, I will have to bill for that lesson, unless alternate arrangements are made.

Additional Thoughts

  • Everyone has the ability to learn to play music! Desire is the most important requirement to learning.
  • There are many good reasons to take music lessons, but it should always be fun and challenging!
  • My students range in age from 6 years old to 85 years old.
  • Re: “How much time do I need to practice?” -- A short period of practice 5-6 times per week, is much more effective than one or two longer practice sessions per week.
  • My overall goal is to equip the student to be able to play the kind of music they want to play. We use tablature, standard musical notation, practical music theory, and ear training – in various ways, depending on the student’s experience and aptitude – as tools to this end.
  • I am a Bluegrass musician, with some experience with Celtic, rock and jazz styles. I offer my expertise in these areas, but mostly desire that the student get the tools needed to maximize their enjoyment of their preferred styles.
  • I have an amp in the studio, for the convenience of those with electric instruments.
